'The Writer's Handbook' is the kind of book you want to hand if you're a neo-writer or even just a writer looking for a publisher. It tells you want publishers are on the market, not only with books but magazines and TV, and under what conditions they are interested in seeing material. Please note: those who are interested don't want to see full manuscripts, just sample chapters and a synopsis. This book is also equipped with both an entry and subject index if you don't want to just browse the entire book. Saying that, I have to confess to devouring the UK agents and publishers sections and then cross-checked them against SF entries to find that was spot on.

The publishers and agents aren't just British but across the world, giving valuable websites - so you can find out exactly what their guidelines are and contact names. With the purchase of the book, you also buy an on-line access code that allows you to access the above website and its regularly up-dated directory.

There are also articles at the front that will guide and advise you in presentation from both sides of the fence. The most important lesson here is publishers and agents weed out those who show lack of punctuation and presentation skills without reading them. Something useful to get sorted before touting your masterpiece around and my continued message about getting it right first saves a lot of re-learning later.

For the writers amongst you, this is your kingdom, so learn what's out there.

GF Willmetts
